Tesco to close popular superstore in weeks – exact date

Tesco currently operates 2,904 stores across the UK, with approximately 809 of them considered superstores, better known by many as “big Tesco”.

Soon it will have one less in its store portfolio with a site in Wiltshire expected to close its doors for good after 16 years of trade.

The chain previously announced the closure of its superstore in Chippenham in January though hasn’t set a final date until now.

Local news outlets have confirmed that the Emery Gate site will be axed on August 15, just under seven weeks from now.

As a popular branch among locals, the closure is said to have been a “difficult decision” by the supermarket giant.

A sign displayed at the shop said: “This store will permanently close on August 15, 2024.”

According to Google Maps, the nearest Tesco store is the smaller Express site in Chippenham, SN15 3EY.

The closure of the Emery Gate branch comes as a sad loss for locals who have taken time to review the superstore.

One person wrote on Google Reviews: “Always a good place to top up your weekly shop. A real shame it’s downsizing and moving. A lot of people are going to find it difficult to do a thorough shop in a smaller store.”

A second shopper said: “It’s a reasonable size Tesco, in the town centre so easy to access.” A third person chimed: “Staff helpful and friendly. Well stocked shelves and a decent variety of stock also. Great parking with a cafe and petrol station.”

According to the Wiltshire Times, a new Tesco Express store will be opened at one of the High Street units vacated by Wilko when the chain closed its doors last year.

No date has been confirmed as of yet, but plans for the look of the shop, including new signage to be installed at the building, have already been approved by Wiltshire Council.

A Tesco spokesperson revealed: “We have taken the difficult decision to close our Chippenham Superstore.

“We have however secured a new smaller premises in Chippenham town centre which we will open as Tesco Chippenham High Street Express, and we look forward to continuing to serve our customers at our local stores.”

It comes following the news of an 88-year-old Marks and Spencer store which will shut its doors on July 6.
