A woman was surprised to discover she had some Premium Bonds gifted to her when she was born.

She contacted NS&I over X, formerly Twitter, asking what to do with her newfound savings. She said: “My parents have found four Premium Bonds that I was gifted on my birth in 1971.

“They’ve given them to me but I have no idea what to do with them. Can you help?”

A representative of NS&I responded to advise what she could do with her late birthday present.

They explained: “When you find old Premium Bonds, the best thing to do is complete the Online and Phone service registration form.

“Once we receive this, we will update the information on the account and send you login details to access the account through our website.”

NS&I services have been affected by the global internet outage that has hit several banks today (July 19).

A spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “Due to the global IT issues, we are experiencing some disruption to our services this morning.

“Our call centre staff can assist customers with general enquiries but are not able to take transactions at the moment.

“We are not aware of any widespread impact to customers accessing their accounts at nsandi.com, but continue to monitor closely.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and are working hard to resolve the situation.”

People with long-lost Premium Bonds that they have just found may want to check if they have any prizes to collect.

This can be done using the prize checker tool on the NS&I website or via the app or an Alexa-enabled device.

Each £1 Bond goes into the monthly prize draw with a chance of being paired with a prize, including one of the two jackpot prizes for £1million.
